Pierre Carles was born in 1962 in Bordeaux, France. After studying social work and journalism, he worked as a news camera operator before directing his first documentary short films for Belgo
French TV show Strip Tease. In 1998 he directed the media criticism film Pas vu pas pris (“not seen, not caught”) selected at the Locarno Festival, then Sociology Is a Martial Art (2001), the only film portrayal of French sociologist Pierre Bourdieu made while he was still alive. Over the past 25 years, he has directed or co-directed a dozen feature-length films, taking a critical look at the wage-earning sector, documenting degrowth, tackling the issue of armed struggle and exploring the anti-IMF policies of Ecuador’s President Rafael Correa. He is currently finishing shooting Who wants Georges Ibrahim Abdallah in jail? a film-investigation into the scandal of the abnormally long detention in France of a Lebanese communist activist who became the longest-serving prisoner of the Israeli-Palestinian war.
