Mercedes comme papillon
La Mosson, suburb of Montpellier, spring 2024. A Traveller wedding is about to take place.
In the bedroom of a small apartment, Luisa and her female cousins gather to talk about their dreams, their traditions and their desire for emancipation. For Luisa, flamenco has become a ritual and a place of freedom.
After completing a degree at the Sorbonne in film aesthetics and practice, I studied a bachelor’s degree in audiovisual arts at the KASK, the Royal Academy of Fine Arts in Ghent, in cinema. I am now doing a Master’s degree specialized in documentary, and I live and work in Brussels.
I write from encounters with spaces and identities, with intimacy. What drives the creative process is the feeling of learning. Learning from the film, from the people filmed. The film tries to understand realities that meet and dialogue. These gypsy women and their way of life were unknown to me, but being women brought us together. The film explores notions of feminism, belonging and social and cultural heritage, as is often the case in my work. It was written with them, with the rhythm of the palmas, the impulsiveness, the cry of the voice, the generation KimK, with the camera body, the dancing body, the body that has to be a virgin to be married, the body magnified.
